  • Lynyrd Skynyrd Album Due May 20th
    from Launch Media :
Lynyrd Skynyrd will release its new album, Vicious Cycle, in May after all. The original May 6th release date was pushed back to late June following Gary Rossington's open-heart surgery on February 24th. However, the band will now release the album on May 20th, just before flying to Europe for its tour opener in Belgium on May 29th with Deep Purple.

The album's first single, "Red, White & Blue," was recently released to radio stations across the country. Lead guitarist Rickey Medlocke says the song's political theme is indicative of the album's direction: "We've gotten into a little bit of political things on this record because of, I guess, everything that's happened lately. I think everybody is so gung-ho in this country right now--of staying free and being able to live out our life the way we want to live it out."

  • Gary Rossington Has Heart Bypass / Album, Tour Delayed
    From Yahoo News :
LOS ANGELES - Gary Rossington, a founding member of the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, underwent successful heart bypass surgery this week, a spokesman said.
The quintuple bypass surgery was performed Tuesday at an Atlanta area hospital, band spokesman Lathum Nelson said in Los Angeles. The 51-year-old guitarist is expected to fully recover within two to three months.
Dr. Martha Smith said a routine screening indicated that Rossington had severe coronary artery disease. "He was taken immediately to surgery and had a successful quintuple bypass. He is doing extremely well," she said in a statement.
Release of Lynyrd Skynyrd's new CD, "Vicious Cycle," will be pushed back from May 6 until late June, Nelson said Wednesday. Tour dates through May 25 are being rescheduled.
In a joint statement, the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd said: "Gary is doing fine after his surgery, and we want him to take the time to properly recover so he can return to his first love, which is the band he started 30 years ago. For all the fans who've bought tickets to the upcoming shows and who've been waiting for the new album, hang in there — we'll be back soon."  The band's hits include "Free Bird" and "Sweet Home Alabama."

  • Billy Powell Not Present At San Antonio Show
I've heard reports that at Skynyrd's recent show in San Antonio, TX Billy Powell was not present and had someone filling in for him on keyboards. No word on why this was the case.

  • Just heard that legendary Skynyrd producer Tom Dowd passed away today in Miami. Besides producing Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Gimme Back My Bullets", "One More From The Road", and "Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991", the man also worked with the Allman Brothers, Derek & The Dominos ("Layla"), Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, The Drifters, and many others. Most significantly in my book, he produced two of the greatest live albums ever ("One More From The Road" and "The Allman Brothers Band Live At The Fillmore East". He will be missed.
  • Word has it that the new Lynyrd Skynyrd album (presumably featuring "The Way", "All Funked Up" and the new version of "Gimme Back My Bullets" with Kid Rock) will hit the shelves in April of 2003.
